Owen Seumptewa, 54, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 27. Owen was born on January 13, 1946 at Bellemont. After completion of high school at Flagstaff High in 1964, Owen went on to receive his Bachelor of Science in biology and his Masters of Arts in education administration from Northern Arizona University.

His accomplishments included 35 years as a professional photographer, administrator and educator. Owen established both the ground and air divisions of Guardian Medical Transport for Flagstaff Medical Center and served as its first manager. He served the Hopi Tribe in the capacity of Director of Education and Director of Human Services. In his service as Director of Native SUN Hopi Solar Electric Enterprise he provided Hopi and Navajo families with solar electricity on their reservations.

Most recently Owen operated his own photography business, Native Shadows. His photographs have been exhibited at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, the Heard Museum, the Museum of Mankind in London, England, the Southwest Museum in Los Angeles, and other institutions. His work has been published in Native Peoples, Southwest Arts, USA Today, Natural History, Arizona Highways, and many other publications.

Throughout his life he served on numerous boards including Native Americans for Community Action (NACA), Hopi School board, The Hopi Foundation, and Flagstaff Mission to the Navajos.

Survivors include his wife Marilyn [Jean Woelk], sons Adrian and Ryan Seumptewa, daughters Antoinette and Skye Seumptewa, all of Flagstaff; sisters Delores Johnson, Eunice Rains and Joy Seumptewa of Phoenix, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held at Flagstaff Christian Fellowship. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the Owen Seumptewa Family Fund through the Wells Fargo Fourth Street Branch, Flagstaff.
