“Music as protest, a way to spread ideas, and bring people together is an old tradition here in the USofA. While it peaked in the 60’s, there continues to be bands that use music to reach people and to affect change. In 1992 while on tour with The Ramones, I met the Benally family. At the time they were a young band going by the name Blackfire. I loved them for their passion and anger, and in a world where everyone seemed to be looking for something to protest, as members of the Navajo Nation, their struggle was and is real. We worked together on their first record (which almost prophetically was drum and bass heavy) and I have watched them grow into the people they are and the band they’ve become. Sihasin is the culmination of years making music and activism the tools to help bring about social and environmental justice. On this new record “Fight Like A Woman” Jeneda and Clayson strive for those ideals through their words and their music with the same passion as the young band I met 25+ years ago. Hear with your ears but listen with your heart.

Love to you both Brother and Sister,

-CJ Ramone – The Ramones

Multi-award winning musicians, Jeneda and Clayson Benally from the Dine’ (Navajo) Nation in Northern Arizona create a politically-charged explosive organic sound out of just bass and drums, inspiring their listeners with a Punk backbone, softened by a Folk heart, thumping by Pop and World Music and based in Diné (Navajo) Rhythm. As brother and sister, they grew up protesting the environmental degradation and inhumane acts of cultural genocide against their traditional way of life.

Workshops

  • All Workshops and Presentations include topics of protecting human rights and sacred sites through cultural and youth empowerment.

Postive Change Through Creative Expression
Problem Solving with Creative Tools:
Culture, Creativity & Action: Youth Empowerment through Self-Expression:
Introducing the Dine’:
Postive Change Through Creative Expression

Creative Expression has allowed for cultures to survive. Building Emotional, physical and a spiritual strength in our diverse world, creative expression has been a backbone of survival.

With limited resources, we use this challenge as a opportunity to utilize your creativity in finding your voice. We will explore how music, voice and dance have been a mouthpiece of injustices, bringing voice to resistances in oppressive situations. These arts are also known for healing in many cultures, we will reconnect with this teaching to help students find their own creative expressions. (In our Navajo culture, art is not separate from our lives but it is part of our existence) 1 hour – 3 hours.

Problem Solving with Creative Tools:

Jeneda and Clayson of Rock Band “SIHASIN” bring a unique approach to problem solving utilizing a vast array of creative tools and techniques. This is a hands-on workshop that will have everyone involved in exploring their creativity to enhance the healing process.

2 day workshop

Culture, Creativity & Action: Youth Empowerment through Self-Expression:

Brother and sister, Clayson and Jeneda Benally present a culturally based approach to issues that they see and experience in their community. They utilize themselves as an example as they speak about personal experiences in utilizing action to create the healthy change that they want to see in their dance, writing, zine making, to song making. The possibilities are endless. This workshop is completely dependent on student interests.

1 hour – 2 day workshop

Introducing the Dine’:

This presentation gives students a personal insight into Dine’ (Navajo) culture from cultural ambassadors. This presentation will give a 101 education into America’s largest land based Tribal Nation. A slideshow, song, dance and a question and answer time is utilized to enhance the learning experience.

45 minutes – 3 hours
